Joseph Suchan

Web & AR Developer

About Me

Welcome!

I’m Joe Suchan. Currently I work as a Senior XR developer for Barkley, an independent, creative idea company based out of Kansas City. A quick history on my career at Barkley. After a few years as a UI Developer, I was wanting a change. I discovered AR and VR; I quickly fell in love with this new creative space. Wanting to break into the world of Extended Reality (XR) and to get clients to follow along, I taught myself how to develop in Spark AR, Effect House, and Lens Studio. I learned this field is always changing, once you think you mastered a program, two more features are added and boom, you’re a novice again. After gathering all my dos and don’ts I was able to pitch to Barkley and our clients the vast potential of Augmented Reality. With a trust between the team at Barkley and our clients I was able to make my own career path and become Barkley’s first Senior Extended Reality Developer. Over the last three months, using global events and trends as inspiration, I’ve created handful of filters. These filters total in over 160 million views, 13 million likes, and 5.5 million plays.

When I’m not building filters for clients, I spend most of my time working on my master’s degree in Human Computer Interactions (HCI). The HCI program has helped me identify emerging trends and technology. As well as new ways to look at design systems, UX practices, and accessibility within these emerging technologies.

Enough of school and work…everyone needs a break to keep their ideas fresh. When I’m not learning, I like to be outdoors either going on runs with my Husky, playing tennis, or holding down the midfield on the soccer pitch.

Work Experience

In December of 2019 I graduated cum laude from Northwest with a bachelor’s degree in Interactive Digital Media Computer Science Programming. Shortly after graduating I accepted an offer from Barkley as a UI Developer. At Barkley I get to work with a wide range of clients such as Planter Fitness, At Home, Bank Midwest, Dairy Queen and many more. As a developer I get to create web banners and explore new ways to make them come to life via animation. The fast paced world of advertising keeps me learning and always on my feet. With a passion to keep learning and challenging myself I taught myself how to create AR effects for Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Snapchat. My excitement for what I can accomplish and learn in Augmented Reality continues grows with its rise in popularity.
